AESC is looking to add an Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist to our team in Florence, SC.

The South Carolina gigafactory in Florence will supply next generation cells for BMW starting in 2026. About the Role

The Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist provides environmental, safety, and health support to production and corporate personnel. Maintain corporate environmental, safety, and health programs and objectives and coordinates safety training programs. Monitors environmental, safety, and health regulations and provides technical support to plant and administrative staff to ensure compliance with federal and state guidelines. Develops, implements and maintains ISO14001 facility certification.

What You Will Do 

  • Provides technical environmental, safety, and health support and information to production and corporate personnel.  
  • Supports the development of strategic planning in the areas of carbon reduction, renewable energy adoption, renewable fuel adoption, and overall emissions management. 
  • Prepares and updates written environmental, safety, and health programs and policies.  
  • Identifies company safety training needs and develops and coordinates safety training programs.  
  • Participates in new product/process reviews, including hazard analyses, operator training, etc.  
  • Supports corporate/plant engineering to implement engineering controls to minimize environmental, safety, and occupational health hazards.  
  • Supports plant personnel in selection of appropriate personal protective equipment.  
  • Maintains corporate environmental and safety library (e.g., videos, regulations, reference manuals).  
  • Promotes environmental, safety, and health awareness through internal company communications and specific training programs.  
  • Serves as a member of the environmental, health and safety steering committee.  
  • Oversees facility compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations. The environmental regulations pertain to, but are not limited to, the following aspects: solid waste, hazardous waste, petroleum storage, material releases, storm water, air releases, wastewater, community right-to-know, any site-specific regulations from local ordinances, etc.  
  • Reviews process-operating procedures/records and provides input for environmental, safety, and health considerations.  
  • Understands federal and state environmental, occupational safety, and health regulations and monitors regulatory changes as they occur.  
  • Provides technical support to plant personnel to ensure compliance with applicable environmental, occupational safety, and health regulations.  
  • Advises manufacturing plants and corporate staff of regulatory changes with which the plant must comply.   
  • Audits practices and records of manufacturing operations to ensure compliance with company programs and federal/state environmental, occupational safety and health regulations.  
  • Responsible for training and re-training on work related injury management protocol as needed; works with claims team to assure appropriate management of work-related injuries/illnesses. 
  • Reviews plant safety committee meeting minutes and safety inspection reports and follows up as necessary.  
  • Reviews injury/illness and non-injury incident investigation reports and follows up as necessary. Meets with management monthly to review any injuries, identify any trends, recommends countermeasures and supports action plans.  
  • Uses ergonomic guidelines to address current manufacturing injury concerns and future model planning.   
  • Provides Industrial Hygiene activities such as air and noise sampling, portable instruments calibration and monitors results to ensure a healthful working environment.  
  • Performs all required actions to maintain compliance with all environmental regulations that apply to the facility. These actions may be required by federal, state, and/or local regulations, local ordinances, site-specific permits, consent orders, and any other legal instrument.  
  • Coordinates the disposal of all waste materials for the facility including the proper evaluation and documentation of any waste characterizations that provides the basis for proper disposal.  
  • Participates or leads any site-specific environmental training that may be required of onsite personnel.  
  • Maintains all environmental permits that apply to the facility, including the timely submittal of any applications, permit modifications, or any other permit actions required to maintain compliance.  
  • Coordinates with onsite Emergency Response Teams to ensure that they are aware of all hazardous materials/wastes that are present onsite including drills.  
  • Reviews, approves, and maintains safety data sheets electronically on a database that supports the site’s compliance with safety and environmental regulations.  
  • Familiarity with the following: Title V Air Permits, RCRA, and EPCRA, and ISO 50001.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

What You Need

  • Bachelor’s degree in a safety science, engineering or industrial engineering discipline, preferred. 
  • A minimum of three years of experience supporting safety, health and environmental operations in a manufacturing/production environment.  
  • DOT certified
  • HAZWOPER 24 hour certified  
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certified
  • Knowledge of chemical manufacturing operations a plus.  
  • Extensive knowledge of State and Federal safety standards. A working knowledge of ergonomic standards and evaluation tools; working knowledge of the company manufacturing processes.  
  • Understands and is experienced in Kentucky workers compensation statutes and case law; understands and is experienced in Kentucky claims and case management; ensures workers compensation process is performed accurately with all team members. 
  • Able to work cross-functionally with staff in Operations, Maintenance, Production, Engineering, Quality, Human Resources and Research and Development.  
  • Working knowledge of word processor, spreadsheet, other PC applications, or mainframe applications to produce non-standard, creative products. 
  • Understands and follows all standards of IATF16949 and VDA 6.3 quality standards. (training and awareness will be provided for those who are not familiar with these standards)
  • Understands and follows all standards of ISO14001 environmental standards. (training and awareness will be provided for those who are not familiar with these standards)

Work Environment

The work environment is primarily an automated manufacturing plant with a concrete floor and is characterized by some temperature extremes, moderate noise, and forklift traffic. The individual must be able to perform all essential functions as appropriate on the plant floor, in meetings, and with employees, management, customers and suppliers.
